Anthony Ekundayo Lennon

Resident Director whilst at Curve

Anthony is extremely proud to be working with Nikolai and the Officer And A Gentleman company!

He is Associate Director at Talawa Theatre Company while training on the Artistic Director Leadership Programme (ADLP).

Anthony’s career initially started as an actor. His theatre experience began at the Cockpit, Old Vic and Lyric Hammersmith youth theatres. He then trained as a three-year company member of the Lyric Theatre’s Shiftwork Company while also attending the Weekend Arts College to study mime. His acting career spans 35 years, during which time he worked for companies like Michael White Productions, Talawa Theatre, Black Mime, Staunch Poets and Players, Double Edge, Black Theatre Forum and Carib Theatre.

Television/film work includes: Grange Hill, Emmerdale, Pressgang, The Bill, Dinotopia and Messiah. His last stage appearance was playing the title role in the Pulitzer Prize winning play Yellowman, written by Dael Orlandersmith (Liverpool & Everyman UK tour - 2006) directed by Gemma Bodinetz.

Anthony is currently assistant director on the Talawa Theatre Company production of Guys And Dolls, directed by Michael Buffong opening later this year at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre.

As a director/assistant director Anthony has worked with Talawa Theatre, Royal Court, Tricycle, Tiata Fahodzi, Curve (Leicester ‘Back to the Lab’ programme), Collective Artists, UK Arts International, Almeida, Contact (Manchester), Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

For Talawa (the UK’s primary Black led theatre company) Anthony directed Winsome’s Daughter by Faith Miller, Rise by Cynthia Bernard and Enter, the Talawa Young People’s Theatre (TYPT) 2012 production. Anthony recently returned to Talawa and directed Hatch and has co-directed a Shakespeare’s work with Paula Garfield for Deafinately Theatre.

In 2016 he directed his own re-visioning of Othello – The Conspiracy at the Birmingham Hippodrome Patrick Centre. He’s also been working at Theatre 503 (Writers Response programme) and The State We’re In festival, directing Article 8 - Simon Scott, George - Simon Topping and BATR – Zone C - Afsaneh Grey.

He was assistant and resident director on the 2015 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Othello, working with Iqbal Khan, featuring Hugh Quarshie as Othello and Lucian Msamati playing the first ever black Iago at the RSC.

One of his career highlights is assisting Debbie Allen with her Broadway to West End transfer of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof working with James Earl Jones, Phylicia Rashad, Sanaa Lathan, Adrian Lester and Nina Sosanya (Novello Theatre).

As well as his artistic work, Anthony is a highly-commended mentor, guest speaker and workshop facilitator for commercial and educational establishments. He has a multifaceted approach which incorporates empowering individuals, utilizing drama as a social or personal development tool. He has been a guest industry speaker/director at Central School of Speech and Drama, Birmingham School of Acting, Drama Studio London, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and currently delivers sessions for Talawa Theatre Company (Learning and participation/MAKE), The Adoptables drama programme and Weekend Arts College.
